Engineering , graphic design , or industrial design?

Wilfred Santacruce: I wanted to design cars. So I wanted to study Industrial Design. However, only 1 school within a 10 hour drive offers this from my area. And tuition was too expensive. So I ended up studying Mechanical Engineering. I later switched to Industrial Engineering since I found it more interesting. My first job out of college was a Mechancial Engineer in the construction field working with HVAC. I worked in CAD. I edited drawings, looked at plans, but I did not design anything. I just came up with solutions to fix bad designs. Mechanical Engineers can also get jobs as design engineers designing mechanical components from machines and equipment. Then I got a job as an Industrial Engineer. Where I used CAD to update the current layout of the manufacturing plant and I used CAD to design new tooling fixtures for the machinist to use. Sometimes, IE's use 3D modeling software to design tooling fixtures. Industrial Design is the bridge between art and engineering. Hav! ing a degree in both Industrial Design and Engineering would help in your future. With a degree in Industrial Design, you can design shoes for Nike, sofa's for Lazy Boy, vacuums for Hoover, bikes for Huffy, laptop cases for Dell, cars for Honda, or pens for BIC. Having an engineering background will help you design better products. IDEO is probably the best company to work at as an Industrial Designer. IDEO is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts close to Boston and MIT. IDEO is the most fun company to work for. Here is an old video we watched about them in school:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M66ZU2PCIcM

Donte Hamme: Industrial Design is more prevalent than Graphic Design, but fails to bring in the money as any Engineering major.

Maynard Reevers: I'm a graphic design student, at first I didn't get into it because I thought it was going to make me a lot of money but simp! ly because I love the art aspect of it, just like you. But aft! er I did a little bit more research, it really depends on where you end up after you're all through the program. There's also nothing wrong with engineering it's a great field, since you don't enjoy math but pretty good at it, it might not be so difficult but you find it more stressful, depending on how much you don't enjoy math....Show more
