If you have a normal t.v. and DVR do you still need a converter box?

Derrick Smsith: The answer depends on whether you are using an antenna, or basic cable (no box).Ignoring the DVR for the moment, you'd need a digital-to-analog converter if your TV is an older model that does not have a built-in digital tuner. If it's an old analog set (maybe 7 years old or more), that's quite likely. It could also be true on any set purchased new in the U.S. prior to March 2007. If you're in doubt, look in its specs for an ATSC tuner. If you don't find it, the set would need the converter.Now, about the DVR. If you're using an antenna, you'd need to get a DVR specifically intended for connection to an antenna. They run anywhere from about $90 to a few hundred. They are readily available on line and in electronics stores.But if you have basic cable, that's another story. Unless you get it from the cable company, getting one that works on your cable system can be challenging, if not impossible. A TiVo would do it, but that costs you a monthly fee.! You'll have to decide if the cost of that, or the cable company's DVR is worth it.Bottom line: no converter on cable, and no converter if you're buying an antenna-type DVR. Carmelina Enoch: this is advisable to envision with Comcast. I incredibly have Verizon, FIOS, and that they mentioned that if we had any analog tvs in our residences, they require between the small digital converter bins (like those the shops are merchandising for antenna, yet altered for FIOS) to be sure that us to maintain receiving their sign. Comcast may well be distinctive, yet FIOS mentioned the two you get an SD cable container or the their digital converter or you will not have the means to get the sign....Show more
